Pelicans are such strange and beautiful birds when you really stop and watch them. They can seem almost awkward on land, but the second they hit the water or catch the wind they become incredibly graceful. I wanted this piece to capture that calm, steady feeling of a pelican drifting through moving water completely unbothered by the chaos around it.
The ocean colours in this painting were one of my favourite parts to work on. I loved building up all the movement and reflections in the water around him while keeping the pelican himself soft and still in the middle of it all.
There’s something very peaceful about pelicans to me. They always seem patient and observant, just quietly going about their business along the coastline. A lot of people also associate them with resilience, abundance and emotional balance because of their strong connection to the sea and water.
